Pomona, Compositional Study

Taking information from a site analysis of the downtown Pomona area, the conceptual focus is on movement and landmarks. The form making is derived from movement patterns of the site analysis, guiding users to different programs of the site while creating gathering areas from the in-between spaces.

The plinth connects its first and second level through multiple staircases throughout the site which feature mezzanine levels across first level programs. Sloped roofs allow the users to have a different perception of the site from various spots they explore, creating a different read of the plinth every time.

The tower then, uses a facade system of perforated panels and angled balconies to allow users to perceive the surrounding landmarks differently. The size of perforations increases with the elevation changes. The perforations also angle towards the downtown Pomona area, giving users different reads of surrounding landmarks from each orientation of the tower.

The overall design is a reflection of the site analysis. Mentioned earlier, the movement researched and categorized from the common interaction of the Pomona area, shaped the transition that people have with the plinth to tower. Balancing the differences between transitory and stationary spaces.
