Mt. Wilson

(Fall 2023)

Mt. Wilson, Landscape Blocks

Located on Mt. Wilson Obvservatory, the project centers on creating a micro-environment for scientists and visitors alike. Through analyzing the existing site with observed usage of the site's topography, the design becomes a series of volumes with subtle rotation.

The result is a continuous view from the observatory telescope to the cliff of the site, embedding the project into the existing history and topography of the site. The ocourtyard aspect of the project diverges the immediate nature of the site to the civilization of a research outpost. Reflecting the environment to the users, the windows are a continuous-framed view of the scenic takeaway from the definition of an outpost.

From the preexisting structure, the design expands on the cycle between observant nature and the footprint left by human interaction. Acknowledging the impact of humanity on the environment contributes to the theme of a research center that blends with its nature.
